Márta Balázs

Some people think that the key to success lies within their daily routines. Do you agree with this, and if so, what is your daily routine?

I don’t agree with this statement. I don’t have any daily routine except for sports activities. I believe in agile management. Obviously, I have a weekly plan, a kind of to-do list, but I prioritize on a daily basis.

Looking back at your teenage years, did you have any entrepreneurial interests?

Yes, I had. My father was an entrepreneur, and at that time in Hungary (after the change of regime in ’89), it was more than inviting to work in the private sector instead of the public one. I was into commerce, and I thought that by using my language skills, I would have worked in the field of export-import.

Is there a specific time of day when you feel most productive?

Basically, yes, there is…I feel most productive around 10 a.m. and around 4 p.m.

Do you think there is one character trait/skill that is important to have in order to become a successful entrepreneur in today’s world?

Well, there are some skills… thinking out of the box, being innovative, sometimes provocative, and very open-minded but at the same time being able to listen to others and to accept decisions made by the team.

Has being a woman in the business world affected you positively or negatively, and how so?

I don’t know. I’ve always been a woman in the business world. I cannot imagine myself otherwise. Positively? Maybe…and negatively… maybe…

What is one major goal that you wish to achieve by 2030?

OMG. So in 2030, I will be 55…I hope that my company will be active and prosperous. I want to hand over the leadership to a mature management. I want to step back from management, but I want some activity which makes me happy. I will be more involved in NGO activities.

Who is your biggest influence, and why?

Well, maybe my husband. He’s been running his own business as a second-generation owner. In the last 20+ years, I saw his up and downs and how he managed to develop the company.

If you could pick one female entrepreneur, who would you say is your biggest inspiration?

It’s difficult…for now; I cannot pick only one female entrepreneur. I know some very inspirative ones, and from them, I learned a lot, mainly from the language industry: Véronique Özkaya,.

What has been the most formative advice you have received and why?

Be brave, and as a CEO, you can always follow your instincts, even if the statistics don’t support your position. Why? Because I spent a lot of time suppressing my instincts only because the “numbers don’t match my idea”.

What has been the most impressive/memorable question anyone has ever asked you?

It was rather a statement: “You represent a local company. But you act as a global one which is cool.”

If you have siblings, are they also entrepreneurs?

I have one sister, and actually, she is my business partner. 😊

Do you think the drive to become an entrepreneur is born with or is learned?

Both. But if it’s born, you have more chance to be not only successful but happy with your business.
