Some people think that the key to success lies within their daily routines. Do you agree with this, and if so, what is your daily routine?
Yes and no. I aspire to routine but appreciate and often default to flexibility in my own routine. I find flexibility gives me the opportunity to be more spontaneous and in the moment. The loose routines I try to keep are an exercise of some form in the morning and turning off my phone ~1 hour before I go to sleep.
Looking back at your teenage years, did you have any entrepreneurial interests?
When I was in high school, I was pretty driven by externally set agendas.. getting good grades, pursuing extracurriculars, excelling in the sports I was a part of… getting into a good college. I demonstrated a lot of leadership qualities in those pursuits, which is an important attribute to being an entrepreneur, but I think I’ve really flexed & strengthened my entrepreneurial spirit as an adult.
Is there a specific time of day when you feel most productive?
The morning! I wish all day I had the energy and productivity I do between 6 am-10 am.
Do you think there is one character trait/skill that is important to have in order to become a successful entrepreneur in today’s world?
Courage. Courage to take risks, make hard decisions, stay the course.
Has being a woman in the business world affected you positively or negatively, and how so?
Positively – I’m a glass-half-full kind of person. Even though I’ve been a woman in male-dominated spaces and experienced negativity at times, I have gained so much more with the energy I’ve put into reflecting on what it means to be a woman in the business world (or a woman in STEM when I was at college).
What is one major goal that you wish to achieve by 2030?
This is very millennial of me.. but buy a house!
Who is your biggest influence, and why?
My parents. They are so, so different, but both curious, open-minded go-getters. They know how to work hard and also how to have fun. They are rational and grounded and have been pillars of strength for me through difficult times and pillars of celebration through exciting moments.
If you could pick one female entrepreneur, who would you say is your biggest inspiration?
I couldn’t pick just one! I’ve met so many incredible female entrepreneurs in the past few years that are simultaneously relatable and inspirational.
What has been the most formative advice you have received and why?
The most important is to work with people you enjoy working with. This has been true no matter what environment I’ve worked in – my first job in consulting when on projects that could be considered the most mundane (procurement cost-cutting work), I had the most fun because of my team. Now, as we’re building De Soi, work that is infinitely rewarding, I find myself surrounded by a team that knows how to laugh and celebrate together.
What has been the most impressive/memorable question anyone has ever asked you?
‘so what?’ It sounds snarky, but it gets at the core of: why does this matter? why should your audience care?
If you have siblings, are they also entrepreneurs?
I have two siblings, and they are not – both are engineers. My whole family is a family of engineers, so I suppose breaking out of that mold (which didn’t take very long as I realized I didn’t have an aptitude for physics very quickly) was entrepreneurial!
Do you think the drive to become an entrepreneur is born with or is learned?
Learned 100%.
